Breaking in to recruitment as a Graduate.

Thursday, August 4, 2016

Final year studies bring on a multitude of stresses: assignments, exams, degree classification and the dreaded job market! Having a fancy degree qualification doesn’t guarantee you a job anymore, so you have to start making yourself desirable as soon as possible. My journey as a graduate within the business world started with social media.

Facebook is not just for catching up with friends and sending silly meme’s; it’s an invaluable marketing tool, and without it I may have not had the opportunity to take my first step into a graduate career. I initially saw the advertisement for a recruitment internship and thought it would be a great opportunity to make sure that in two years’ time I was going to be noticed in the graduate market. Which is all good in theory, but then how was I going to make sure I stood out in the undergraduate market?

This advertisement had been sent out on social media to not only everyone on my course, but the whole of the University, I’d just be another CV. So instead of sending my CV to an over flowing inbox, I made sure I was dressed well and made an impromptu visit to the recruiter hiring the intern. Thankfully, putting a face to my CV paid off and I was interviewed that week; and bagged myself a great opportunity with my future employer.

My internship was 12 weeks getting to know how Consilium and recruitment worked in general, I was integrated into the team helping to gather client information and potential leads. I was even invited to the Christmas do. During my short stint I felt fully invested in Consilium, their values, and my colleagues. Not only this, but I had something that made me different from thousands of other students due to graduate in 2016.

If I could give advice to anyone, start looking for your opportunity as soon as possible because you don’t know where it might appear from. Maybe even between a silly cat meme and your mum’s, friends, sister’s happy birthday message.
