Working in partnership with Consilium Recruit they are seeking a Research Engineer - Modelling and Simulation Physicist. This is a Senior Research Engineer role based in the Modelling and Simulation department within Digital Engineering Group, delivering work and fundamental research in the area of Physics Modelling.

The Role


The purpose of the Research Engineer - Modelling and Simulation Physicist role is to support the Physics Modelling team by contributing to projects and fundamental research that include requirements specification, creative problem solving, solution concepts, robust model development, understanding, application and analysis of underlying physics, numerical and mathematical models and optimisation methods of manufacturing processes and / or products, ranging over a wide spectrum of Sectors.


As Research Engineer - Modelling and Simulation Physicist duties and responsibilities include:

  • Providing a level of business and technical leadership, and proactively contribute and support the functioning and development of the other technical areas of the team (technical governance, business, technology and strategy development and project management).

  • Contributing towards projects, either as technical leader or work package leader, in line with MTC standards and best practices.

  • Undertaking innovative engineering research and development work focused on enabling advancements in technology / manufacturing (simulation) readiness levels (TRL/MRL/MSRL), and to be able to demonstrate industry-relevant project delivery that address the UK Grand Challenges.

  • Involvement in all aspects of the project delivery, taking overall ownership of technical direction and management of client / stakeholder relationship and expectations, ensuring compliance with all relevant business standards and processes, as well as management of project budget and deliverables.

  • Providing expert knowledge and experience of conducting modelling and simulation studies and analysis for a range of solution concepts, be able to develop, integrate and implement physics-based models, understand the underlying physics, numerical and engineering principals and theories to facilitate the optimisation of manufacturing processes and designs of products.

  • Interacting and networking with internal teams, groups and business managers to identify opportunities and provide solutions to technical decisions that encompass both technology push and industry pull requirements.

  • Proactively contribute and support towards, and develop personal and professional skills in line with, the functional leads of the department, as well as supporting others in the teams to accomplish the same



The Person


The ideal candidate for the role of Research Engineer - Modelling and Simulation Physicist will have / be:

  • Extensive experience working in fast-paced academic, research or commercial project-based environments, applying modelling and simulation technologies (e.g. FEA, CFD, DEM) to solve customer needs;

  • An understanding of commercial trends and developments within simulation industry;

  • Strong logical reasoning and analytical skills;

  • A relevant engineering, maths, physics, data, computational or materials science, or any other relevant background or Degree, with a particular focus to industrial applications;

  • Evidential aptitude in using dedicated commercially available or open source engineering software tools (e.g. Comsol, Ansys, Abaqus, StarCCM+, LIGGHTS, OpenFoam) and be familiar with one or more coding languages (e.g. python, Java, C++), preferably in the development of subroutines of applications;

  • Knowledge / awareness of model and systems integration, simulation data management;

  • Familiar with conducting modelling and simulation studies within VVUQ frameworks;

  • Subject matter expertise in one or more of the core areas of application within the business: laser processing and surface engineering, material joining, additive manufacturing, net-shape technologies, bending & forming, machining etc.;

  • Subject matter excellence in one or more (multi-) physics implemented within the team: electromagnetics, fluid dynamics or particle motion, structural mechanics or heat transfer;

  • Desirable to have knowledge in sustainability or circular economy;

  • Desirable to have collaborative R&D bid writing experience, as lead or contributor;

  • Strong acumen in research methods, horizon scanning, publications, conferencing, and strategic networking across academia and industry;

  • Excellent communication, presentation and report writing skills.
