Working in partnership with Consilium Recruit they are seeking a Senior Research Engineer or Principal Research Engineer in Laser Processing.

The Role

This role will work within the Laser Processing Team to support the Technology Manager and other Principal Engineers in the identification of new and novel laser processing technology and processes for inclusion in projects or the team technical strategy whilst acting as a role model for other engineers within the group.
Responsibilities will include:

Using specialist knowledge to deliver and/or manage a portfolio, transferring technology Laser Processing into industry through the technology readiness levels (TRL`s). Leads, delivers and manages a range of complex technical work in specialist area and related technologies
To ensure the delivery of high quality project work and support technical development within the laser processing group.

To both deliver and coordinate the delivery of innovative manufacturing research projects in the area of laser machining technologies including laser ablation, laser machining, micro-machining or texturing.

To define and propose projects in collaboration with the MTC sector teams, which align with the team competencies and technical strategy, which would ensure a stable long-term portfolio
To identify and support the TM with future technology strategy and growth areas, through supporting capex bids, writing roadmaps and identifying and submitting CR&D calls.

To be responsible for their own portfolio of work through working across the business and with the TM to identify new opportunities

To lead the technology strategy (including capex, CR&D and industrial links) where relevant for specialist area. To support engineers development in specialist area.

The Person

A BSc or BEng degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Materials, Aerospace or Welding Engineering, ideally a Masters or PhD in a related topic i.e. Laser Processing with at least 3 years of relevant technical experience either in industry or academia working on laser processing technologies, and evidence of leading technical projects successfully in this field during this time

You should have proven experience in implementing innovative laser machining / texturing / micro-machining processes with a working knowledge of the fundamentals of laser processing technologies, automated/semi-automated laser machining processes and a range of laser sources/types/machines for machining of novel materials

You should be able to deliver on projects and able to work independently or work within a team, have experience writing proposals to meet customer needs and a level of ability to lead and deliver high profile customer projects.

Ideally candidates should be competent in writing competitive funding bids (eg Innovate UK or H2020) and be competent in writing case studies and other marketing materials.
