The Role    

 

Duties and responsibilities of The Senior Research Engineer - Machine Design include:

 

  • Leading project technical deliverables, taking ownership to ensure work meets or exceeds agreed customer requirements, and is delivered within agreed budgets and timescales. Where delegated, to act as Technical Governance lead for project deliverables.

  • Undertake innovative Engineering research work focused primarily on technology/manufacturing readiness levels (TRL/MRL) 3+, and able to demonstrate industrial project delivery.

  • You will support Senior Managers with a proactive approach in the identification, technical specification, and delivery of new and novel technology capability into the MTC, customers, or industrial members premises.

  • You will require involvement in all aspects of the project delivery, taking overall ownership and ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, technical support of commissioning, management of project budget and deliverables.

 

 

The Person

 

The successful candidate for the role of Senior Research Engineer - Machine Design would have at least 5-10 years mechanical and/or manufacturing engineering experience and in addition will have/be:

 

  • Degree educated holding one of the following; BSc, BEng, MSc or MEng in an appropriate Mechanical Engineering or suitable Engineering discipline.

  • Extensive knowledge of materials, relevant directives, regulations and standards, mechanical principles and manufacturing techniques.

  • Demonstrable experience of designing machinery, manufacturing equipment or products;

  • Develop creative solutions to complex problems and deliver on these from concept to physical realisation, both for clients and within the business;

  • Demonstrable knowledge of problem solving tools and error-proofing techniques, taking the initiative to proactively resolve where identified

  • Demonstrable experience of identifying project and business risks and must be able to escalate and resolve them.

  • Experience writing test specifications and design of experiments or other techniques to provide systematic testing

  • Working knowledge of Siemens NX, Solidworks, or other CAD software package;

  • Awareness or working knowledge of electrical, electronic, pneumatic or hydraulic components

  • Experience or awareness of using PLC hardware, Arduino or Raspberry Pi. Experience in any relevant programming language;

  • Experience working with the Machinery Directive and CE/UKCA marking guidelines;

  • Working knowledge of FEA, simulations or surface modelling;

  • Evidence of being competent in MS Project;

  • Competent, or aware of, Agile / Scrum project management skills, ;

  • Competent in writing case studies or project proposals;

  • To have achieved or be in the process of achieving Chartered Engineer Status;
